Meltdowns, detachment and the future - part II

As I wrote last week, we all know that upheaval and collapse are all around us. The structures that have given us support are falling apart. Most people no longer find support from their families. It is difficult to find a true friend. Most parishes are dysfunctional. Our country has been taken over. We are living in a dictatorship of the liberal elite. Institutions that provided a lot of hope for many people are in meltdown mode.

Pride, arrogance, sin, corruption, denial and complicity all combine to cause the rise and the fall of nations, institutions and people.

Many innocent people get hurt. Many people are angry, anxious and discouraged.

The Church and the entire world are going through what St. John of the Cross called the dark night of the spirit.

In this time of intense spiritual warfare and purification, I would like to turn your attention to a text from a spiritual writer. The text is very important, although the author has written some things that were off the mark; nevertheless what he writes here is very important for our spiritual journey. The Holy Spirit is calling us to the desert. We need to be detached from all human support and immerse ourselves in God.

“Think of a life in which you depend on no one emotionally, so that no one has the power to make you happy or miserable anymore. You refuse to need any particular person or to be special to anyone or to call anyone your own. The birds of the air have their nests and the foxes have their holes, but you will have nowhere to rest your head in your journey through life. If you ever get to this state, you will at last know what it means to see with a vision that is clear and unclouded by fear or desire. Every word there is measured. To see at last with a vision that is clear and unclouded by fear or desire. You will know what it means to love. But to come to the land of love, you must pass through the pains of death, for to love persons means to die to the need for persons, and to be utterly alone.

How would you ever get there? By a ceaseless awareness, by the infinite patience and compassion you would have for a drug addict. By developing a taste for the good things in life to counter the craving for your drug. What good things? The love of work which you enjoy doing for the love of itself; the love of laughter and intimacy with people to whom you do not cling and on whom you do not depend emotionally but whose company you enjoy. It will also help if you take on activities that you can do with your whole being, activities that you so love to do that while you’re engaged in them success, recognition and approval simply do not mean a thing to you. It will help, too, if you return to nature. Send the crowds away, go up to the mountains and silently commune with trees and flowers and animals and birds, with sea and clouds and sky and stars…

At first this will seem unbearable. But it is only because you are unaccustomed to aloneness. If you manage to stay there for a while, the desert will suddenly blossom into love. Your heart will burst into song. And it will be springtime forever; the drug will be out; you’re free. Then you will understand what freedom is, what truth is, what God is. You will see, you will know beyond concepts and conditioning, addictions and attachments. Does that make sense?” (Anthony de Mello, Awareness pp. 173-174)

My dear friends, there is no doubt in my mind that we are in the middle of an intense period of purification. Everything around us is crumbling. Something new will emerge from the rubble. Pope Benedict has spoken about a Church which is smaller, but more faithful.

This is why I have been inviting you to incorporate into your spiritual life contemplative prayer. My Electronic Parish website has a new section on contemplative prayer that can help you to get started.

Satan has launched an intense attack on the Church; in fact he has launched an assault on the entire world. This is why a powerful spiritual life is so vital in order to persevere. Pray the Rosary every day.

Remember that the real name for Our Lady of Guadalupe is not Guadalupe. Her real name is Our Lady of “quatlasupe”. “Quatlasupe” is the Aztec word for “she who crushes the serpent”. Stay close to Mary. She will protect you.

Remember, use the sacramentals: holy water, blessed salt, miraculous medals and the St. Benedict medal. God has provided us with an arsenal of weapons to fight Satan.

“Put God’s armor on so as to be able to resist the devil’s tactics. For it is not against human enemies that we have to struggle, but against the Sovereignties and the Powers who originate the darkness of this world, the spiritual army of evil in the heavens. That is why you must rely on God’s armor, or you will not be able to put up any resistance when the worst happens, or have enough resources to hold your ground” (Ephesians 6: 1-13).
The world economy will continue to spin out of control. A corrupt and sinful people cannot sustain an ordered society. There will be further economic turmoil, maybe even a total collapse of the world economy. The President’s economic policy will not work.

The economy could fall quickly and loudly. There will be a moment of intense violence. Order will be imposed by a police state. Peace will emerge, but our world will change dramatically. We will be forced to return back to basics.

Gone will be the credit cards, the malls, corporations and a global economy. Gone will be the abortion industry, the contraception industry and the pornography industry. Gone will be the drug cartels. Gone will be the Trilateral Commission, the Council of Foreign Relations, the Bildenbergers, the World Bank and the United Nations. Gone will be the corruption within the Catholic Church – entire religious orders and dioceses will go out of business because there will be no money to feed them.

When Nazi troops and tanks were marching through Poland, what did the young Karol Wojtyla do? Did he buy gold? Did he store food? Did he take up a gun?

Providentially, a mystic by the name of Jan Tyranowski introduced the future Pope to the works of St. John of the Cross and invited him to participate in a Catholic men’s group that he had formed.

The Living Rosary, created by Tyranowski, consisted of teams of fifteen young men, led by a more mature young person who received personal spiritual direction from Tyranowski. The Polish mystic, who was a simply tailor, met with the entire Living Rosary organization the third Sunday of every month. Tyranowski was able to instill in his young followers a deep spiritual life and a profound zeal for the salvation of souls.

Tyranowski’s Living Rosary organization is exactly what we need to be doing now during this intense occupation of the culture of death. Form small groups in your parish, your school or in your home. Let these small groups inspire you to go deep into the spiritual life. Let these small groups instill in you a profound zeal for the salvation of souls.

Abandon yourself into the loving hands of an awesome God that loves us unconditionally. Allow yourself to be purified. Do not let yourself be consumed by anger, fear, anxiety, frustration, discouragement or resentment. Enter into the dark night of the spirit. Do not be afraid. If you persevere, “the desert will suddenly blossom into love. Your heart will burst into song. And it will be springtime forever”.

Father, thank you so much for your wisdom and insights. Your words have brought me comfort in these troubling times. Thank you also for this site. It is clear that the Holy Spirit is working through you to help us poor lost souls try to make sense of our kaotic world. Please continue to show us "how" to cooperate with God to bring about his Kingdom. It is my prayer that God will continue to bless and protect you.

Awe. Some. God flagrantly bless you. Can you, Father, tell me some good advice when I cycle to Lawrence, KS, a world of abortion-ridden-people who don't know life, rampant homosexuality, and vain materialism (the home of Kansas University where most, if not alla the teachers/students don't believe in anything but themselves) TO try to instill in them OUR webpage to spark their interest (like Lenin's paper) in the Great Beyond? Thanx muchly. God blessa youse -Fr. Sarducci, SNL

Father, satan is attacking all of us lovers of God, the Church, faithful priests like yourself, marriages and families, those of us who are alone, all of us who worship and adore Jesus, the Son of God. The devil truly "prowls about the world seeking the ruin of souls". Thank you for your wisdom and comfort, I am so afraid for mankind and our eternal salvation.

Thank ou Father for your wisdom. I awoke this AM felling anxious. Then I read your article. Eph. 6 was one of the first scriptures I ever remembered. My husband died 15 months ago and it is difficult without him. When I read Illegitimi non carborundum - it brought a smile - cause in the difficult times - this is what my husband would say. For me today - your article tells me that God is always with us. Again Thank you.

when Jesus went at night into the Garden to pray, his disciples grew tired waiting for Him and grew drowsy and fell asleep . . . Jesus asked them: "could you not watch with me one hour?" . . .the truth is, time was growing short and wakefulness and watchfulness had an urgency and needfulness.

we live in such times now. Jesus is with The Father and simply asks us to remain in prayer with Him, to be awake and watchful. Yet we often grow tired and "sleepy" waiting for Jesus . . . in this world, as seemingly crumbling and dissolving as it is around us, He still asks us that same question and urging: "could you not watch with Me one hour?" . . .

don't look to the world, to world leaders (world mis-leaders), to politicians and television/radio talking heads, to the entertainment diversions of modern day "bread and circuses" - but just "be with Jesus" and pray with Him and watch with Him. whatever the future of the world may or may not be, we know that our own time here is always very short and the hour is late, but Jesus is eternal.

Thank you Father for being a priest who understands what the world is going through. Most do not, or it is "sugar coated". We need to know and hear that we are not crazy or fanatics. This is the real deal and Our Lady told us so. God be with you and Mary protect you as you proclaim the truth.

Thank you so much Father. I've been seeing this battle in my heart, and it is comforting to know we have Holy Priests to lead us to victory over sin and satan.
Your guidance is appreciated and needed, please keep up the great work.

dear Father, you have described my present life to a tee. my husband is in a midsummer nights dream. has left us, bought a new place and sees a new lady. so out of character it is incredible.
my youngest has turned 18 so he will not support us. so i am so reliant on God for relief teaching everything in fact. i have 4 uni students with me and of course they cannot contribute much financially.
i have a couple of close prayerful friends who are praying so much for me.
my mother has bad dementia.
so yes, i am in the desert.
i know with prayer the midsummer dream will pop. but in meantime i am being strengthened in the Lord.
thank you for your writing, it is a marvellous gift to me personally because truly it is my life.
please keep me in prayer as the last couple of months truly have been tough however i am still here thanks to God.anne

Your picture of the Titanic struck a chord. For a while now I've been thinking that we are just like the passengers on the Titanic, just after it struck the iceberg. We've only felt the lightest movement, and are reassuring each other that everything will be fine, because after all, the Titanic is unsinkable. No problem. Let's rearrange our deck chairs, break out the booze, and keep on dancing.

Very Dear Father,
I have reread this article numerous times this past 24 hours. I think understand now what has been happening for so long, and why.
Many, many souls, including myself, have been begging in prayer for a good spiritual advisor. Times are such that Our Heavenly Father is giving these to us now, and I think I have found one here.
Thank you good Father

Thank you Father and all good contributors to the posts. I have felt "unique" in my aloneness lately and admitedly not liking it. But I take new courage in it now and will try to count it a privilege to have the time to pray and meditate. Recently downsized from an organization, I can get caught up in the stress of not having a job and wondering what will happen to my retirement nestegg. But this is not my security and I know that but it's easy to get caught up in the news on the internet and tv of gloom and doom. Thank you for the encouragement to "stay focused" on the truth.

I am spreading this message around inspired by the niece of Mdartin Luther King. Without rancor or anger, write to president Obama, tell him most of us don't want the Freedom of Choice Act. Tell him that prenatal murder is unacceptable. slavery was good for most everyone and the economy, but not for the poor black person, thus they declared that black people were not really human.
Abortion seems to be good for many, so they declare that the child is not human. Could it be if we could stop abortion, the chastisement could be lessened.

Check out this new Catholic band that just released their first album.

From what I heard on the samples site, they sound really good.

Introducing the new Christian National Anthem: Guns & Jesus.

Yes, in the Holocaust, the Jews were life unworthy of life. During slavery, the slaves--owned not only by whites but by fmc--free men of color--were also life unworthy of life. Now, little babies are often life unworthy of life. Yes, as someone said above, we must repent of sin, turn away, and be cleansed by the blood of Jesus and forgiven by Him. Read St. Paul's letters to the Hebrews, Galatians 1, and Romans. God bless us all.

Question:
Why would you reference anything to do with Anthony de Melo, and quote his writings? And why would you promote Centering Prayer, and then turn around offering yourself as a guide to contemplative prayer?

You should know that introducing writers such as de Melo tendss to lead unsuspecting souls to delve into his works further - to 'drink at the source'.

With all due respect Father, you should know that.

Right Terry. Here is what Paul Melanson posted at La Salette Journey:

Father Anthony de Mello, S.J., A Warning from the CDF...

"..in certain passages in these early works [of Fr. de Mello] and to a greater degree in his later publications, one notices a progressive distancing from the essential contents of the Christian faith. In place of the revelation which has come in the person of Jesus Christ, he substitutes an intuition of God without form or image, to the point of speaking of God as a pure void. To see God it is enough to look directly at the world. Nothing can be said about God; the only knowing is unknowing. To pose the question of his existence is already nonsense. This radical apophaticism leads even to a denial that the Bible contains valid statements about God. The words of Scripture are indications which serve only to lead a person to silence. In other passages, the judgment on sacred religious texts, not excluding the Bible, becomes even more severe: they are said to prevent people from following their own common sense and cause them to become obtuse and cruel. Religions, including Christianity, are one of the major obstacles to the discovery of truth. This truth, however, is never defined by the author in its precise contents. For him, to think that the God of one's own religion is the only one is simply fanaticism. "God" is considered as a cosmic reality, vague and omnipresent; the personal nature of God is ignored and in practice denied....those responsible for safeguarding the doctrine of the faith have been obliged to illustrate the dangers in the texts written by Father Anthony de Mello or attributed to him, and to warn the faithful about them." - Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Notification Concerning the Writings of Fr. Anthony de Mello S.J.
